Wind power project in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan
Centaur Mercantile Private Limited (CMPL), have installed 8.4 MW (4 units of 2.1 MW Wind Turbine Generators (WTGs) of Suzlon make) wind power project at Sonu site in Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan. The project utilizes wind energy for generating electricity which otherwise would have been generated through alternate fuels (most likely - fossil fuel) based power plants, contributing to reduction in specific emissions (emissions of pollutant/unit of energy generated) including GHG emissions. Being a renewable resource, using wind energy to generate electricity contributes to resource conservation. The project proponent developed this project keeping in consideration of the funding available under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. This project activity is a qualified CDM project as it reduces the power consumption from the electricity grid thereby helping in significant reduction of GHG emissions. The project activity is also responsible for sustainable economic growth and conservation of the environment through use of wind as a renewable source.
Contribution of the project activity to sustainable development
The contributions of project activity towards sustainable development are explained with indicators like contributions to social well-being, economic prosperity, environmental well-being and technological aspects as follows:
Contribution to Social Wellbeing:
- The project activity contributes towards local socio-economic development around its area of operation through provision of employment opportunities (direct and indirect) for local population.
Contribution to Economical Wellbeing (Economic Prosperity):
- The project activity directly contributes in saving of the precious natural resources and also aid in the reduction of pollution.
- By providing employment opportunities, this project activity leads to development in the local economy.
Contribution to Environmental Wellbeing:
- The project activity do not results in generation of any pollutant to the air (CO2, NOx, SOx etc.) or water or land pollution, since it is a clean source of power generation, utilizing the wind energy. Thus, the project activity is generating power without having any adverse impact on the environment.
Contribution to Technological Wellbeing (Technological Up-gradation):
- The project activity involves the installation of WTGs. Therefore, this project motivates other proponents in the surrounding area to put up high-efficiency WTGs.
