Your questions
Your carbon footprint is the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere by your activities over the course of a year.
Unfortunately, it's bigger than you think. Even if you were to eat plant-based food, take the train not the plane and reduce your driving it's still incredibly high. This is a result of living in an an advanced industrial economy, pretty much everything we do has a carbon impact.
While we as a country are getting better at reducing our emissions, it's still too high to stop climate change.
It's difficult to work out the exact amount per person (everyone's different) but organisations from the World Bank to the US Government put the average CO2 emissions per person at somewhere between 7 and 10 tons every year.
That's why we started GiskerECO, we can all offset our emissions, and make the country carbon zero sooner.
We wanted to make a difference, but didn't really know how we could personally reduce our emissions to zero.
When we looked into it, it turns out that you can make a big difference to your personal CO2 emissions for a lot less than we expected.
After we figured this out, we wanted to make it quick and easy for others to join us. So we created GiskerECO.
We're not a charity but a social enterprise. This means we are not registered as a non-profit. We initially thought that we would register GiskerECO as a charity, but it turns out that being a charity makes it much more difficult for us to have a huge impact on the climate.
We want to grow quickly and make a major impact. That means we need access to investment and the ability to pay market rates for exceptional people that can help us grow. We can only do this as a social enterprise.
